In a significant milestone, Neuralink founder Elon Musk announced that the company's first human trial participant has successfully used an implanted brain chip to control a computer mouse. This achievement marks progress towards Neuralink's goal of enabling those with paralysis to operate digitals devices with their thoughts.

The participant had the quarter-sized chip implanted by Neuralink six weeks prior. Through Bluetooth connectivity, the user has since learned to manipulate a mouse cursor on screen through intentional thinking prompted by visual cues.

Musk said the company is focused on enabling a range of mouse functions from basic clicking to more complex activities. The next phase of trials aims to transmit full text input by having participants mentally type sentences at speed using a digital keyboard interface.

Beyond typing, Neuralink ultimately seeks FDA approval to help those with spinal cord injuries regain mobility and independence. The brain implants could allow users to control smartphones, computers, and even robotic limbs using thoughts alone - restoring communication and functionality.

Neuralink also aspires to return vision to the blind via video feed into the brain and assist paraplegics in walking again. While ambitious, these innovations could dramatically improve quality of life for those suffering from paralysis or disabilities.

However, the path towards consumer availability still proves long with regulatory procedures required before widespread implantation. Neuralink must definitively demonstrate both medical necessity and safety standards given past scrutiny over its rushed testing approach.

With disabled individuals already manipulating digital devices through experimental brain wave readers, Neuralink won't enjoy monopolies. But the company's recent progress exemplifies accelerating innovation at the intersection of neuroscience and computing.
