ChatGPT, the cutting-edge chatbot developed by OpenAI, has captured widespread attention and acclaim with its remarkable performance. Over the past few months, its popularity has skyrocketed, attracting a substantial number of users and generating significant engagement.

However, the latest data analysis reveals a concerning trend: in the month of June, ChatGPT witnessed a decline in its traffic, with a notable 10% decrease compared to the preceding months.

The decline in traffic represents a significant shift for ChatGPT, which had been experiencing an upward trajectory in terms of usage and user engagement. During its initial phases, ChatGPT's growth was particularly impressive, capturing the interest and fascination of users worldwide. However, the data indicates that this rapid expansion was not as pronounced within the United States as it appeared on a global scale.

Although its expansion in the United States was not as extraordinary as it appeared on a global scale, even within the US, the traffic for ChatGPT started to diminish in June.

ChatGPT has been a phenomenon since its launch, experiencing extreme growth from zero to over 1.5 billion visits in March 2023. However, it recorded a decrease in monthly visits for the first time since November 2022. Despite this, it is essential to note that ChatGPT's traffic figures are still relatively high for such a new product.

The phenomenal growth that ChatGPT has experienced appears to have slowed significantly since March 2023. As previously stated, from May to June, ChatGPT's traffic declined by about 10% for the first time, according to SimilarWeb. The number of unique users fell by about 6%, and time spent on the platform also decreased slightly.

DECLINING TRAFFIC DOES NOT NECESSARILY MEAN FEWER USERS OR LESS REVENUE FOR OPENAI:

It's important to note that a decline in traffic does not necessarily result in fewer users or less revenue for OpenAI. Ultimately, what matters is the conversion rate, i.e., how many users interact with the service on a daily basis and become paying customers. The number of OpenAI's B2B customers accessing the models via the API is likely to increase, which means that OpenAI's revenues could remain stable or even increase.

BING.COM HAS BENEFITED LITTLE FROM THE HYPE SURROUNDING BING CHAT AND OPENAI:

Despite all the excitement and attention surrounding Bing Chat and OpenAI, Bing.com hasn't really seen much of a positive impact. In fact, the number of people visiting Bing.com has actually decreased since the peak of the hype in February and March 2023. The number of visits is still slightly higher than what it was in November 2022, which was before ChatGPT was launched and integrated into Microsoft's search engine. So overall, Bing.com hasn't experienced a significant boost from Bing Chat and OpenAI and remains relatively unchanged in terms of visitor numbers.

NO IMMEDIATE GROWTH FROM CHATGPT PLUGINS:

In May 2023, ChatGPT introduced new features like plugins and web browsing capability. However, these additions didn't cause a significant increase in the platform's growth. OpenAI's plugin launch has been somewhat disappointing. The plugin store lacks a search function, which makes it difficult for users to find specific plugins they might be interested in. Additionally, the user interface doesn't provide much guidance on the advantages of the more than 400 available plugins. As a result, the impact of these new features on the overall popularity of ChatGPT has been limited.

TRAFFIC NUMBERS ARE SLOWING DOWN AFTER TREMENDOUS GROWTH:

ChatGPT, being a relatively new product, continues to generate a remarkably high amount of traffic. Although there has been a slight decrease in traffic numbers in recent months, OpenAI is not likely to be concerned, particularly considering the transition into the summer season. It's important to remember that ChatGPT is still in its early stages, and such fluctuations in traffic are to be expected.

THE LAUNCH OF GPT-4 IN MARCH DID NOT RESULT IN ANOTHER MAJOR GROWTH:

The release of GPT-4 in March 2023 generated a lot of excitement and anticipation among users and experts alike. Many were hoping that the new iteration of the language model would spark another major growth spurt for the technology. Despite these high hopes, the impact of GPT-4 on overall growth has been less significant than anticipated. It seems that the release of GPT-4 hasn't resulted in the same level of exponential growth and widespread adoption that previous versions of the model achieved.

OPENAI'S BROWSING FEATURE IS SLOW AND UNRELIABLE:

OpenAI recently made the decision to disable the browsing feature in their platform. This feature allowed users to browse the web and access content directly within the ChatGPT interface. It was found that some users were misusing this feature to bypass paywalls set up by publishers, essentially accessing paid content for free. In order to address this issue and respect the rights of publishers, OpenAI chose to disable the browsing feature.

CHATBOTS,ESPECIALLY WITH PLUGINS, ARE STILL IN THEIR INFANCY:

ChatGPT and its plugins have undoubtedly made a significant impact in the realm of chatbots, introducing a new level of sophistication and versatility. It's essential to recognize that these technologies are still in their early stages of development. While they have already demonstrated impressive capabilities, there is room for further growth and improvement.

The crucial question that arises is how quickly and extensively OpenAI can advance and refine these technologies. As with any emerging technology, there is a need for continuous innovation and enhancement to address limitations, improve performance, and expand the range of applications. OpenAI's ability to navigate this developmental journey will play a crucial role in determining the future trajectory of their offerings.

ChatGPT's traffic decline in June is a clear indication that the platform's growth has slowed. However, this does not mean that ChatGPT is on the path to failure. As we have seen, OpenAI's revenues could remain stable, and there are more B2B customers accessing the models via the API. Additionally, despite the plugin launch being underwhelming, ChatGPT and its plugins are still in their infancy, and it remains to be seen how quickly OpenAI can make improvements. Chatbots are the future, and OpenAI is one of the trailblazers in this field.
